Local and Ethnic Features of Chinese Ethnic Minority Medicine

Chinese Ethnic Minority Medicine

Medicine is a fundamental necessity of human civilization. Man has from the very beginning been engaged in a constant struggle with nature and the diseases and infections that have caused so many deaths to humans. Humankind's will to survive is one of the prime driving factors in the development of medical knowledge.

Medicine goes hand in hand with the life that different peoples lead. Ethnic medicine is a manifestation of the collective wisdom of a people: the result of the experiences obtained from the long struggle of Chinese minorities with disease and death. It is deeply rooted in the cultural, religious and social life of individual ethnic groups.

Ethnic medicine also has a very much localized character. The development and evolution of medicines differs from one people to another; from one civilization to another, differences can most clearly be seen in the areas of medical techniques, methods and medicines prescribed. This is only natural since different ethnic groups have different natural environments, modes of production, living conditions and diseases, to say nothing of the influence of philosophy and religion.

For many centuries the Tibetans lived the nomadic life of hunters. Thus their environment and lifestyle combine to produce the result that such afflictions as altitude disease, high blood pressure, strokes, pulmonary heart disease, rheumatism, liver disease, and intestinal tract diseases are common amongst Tibetans. Therefore, Tibetan medicines have developed methods to deal with and treat these diseases. Urinalysis diagnosis is a major feature of Tibetan medicine. Balneotherapy is also very popular.

In northern China, the Mongolian people have led a nomadic existence for millennia.Their diet is dominated by beef, mutton and horsemeat as well as dairy products. So it is that they have much more understanding of the medical problems that arise due to the consumption of such foodstuffs. Dietetic therapeutics occupies a very important position in Mongolian medicine. Since Mongolians inhabit a region that is cold and wet, acupuncture was also a treatment developed by them at a very early date. They gallop their horses all year round on the vast grassland and thus falls resulting in bone fractures are common. Thus the practices of bonesetting and burning therapy have also reached a high level of development among Mongolian doctors.
