Bshad rgyud divides Tibetan materia medica into eight classes, namely, jewelry, earth, stone, tree, juice and essence, grass grown in dry places, and animals. Salts and alkalines are categorized under earth, and there are no categories of grain, water and fire. Each class is further divided into sub-classes. For jewelry, earth and stone, descriptions are given directly under each herb. Tree is further divided into root, branch, stem, ramulose, resin, leaf, flower and fruit. For grass grown in wet places, it is further divided into root, pedicle, leaf, flower and fruit; there is no subclass for grasses grown in dry places. Animal drugs are divided into horn, bone, flesh, blood, bile, fat, brain, skin, claw, hair, dung, urine and insect, egg, altogether 13 subclasses.
In the 13th century, Kar ma pa rang byung rdo rje in his Sman gyi nus ba phyogs gcig tu bstan pa sman ming rgya mtsho (Augmented Descriptions for Materia Medica and Their Titles), divides Tibetan materia medica into eight classes, namely, jewelry, stone, water, fire, tree, juice and essence, wet-growing grass, dry-growing grass and animal flesh, along with many subclasses.
Shel gong shel phreng identified 13 classes: jewelry, stone, earth, juice and essence, tree, wet-growing grass, dry-growing grass, salt and alkaline, animal,grains, water, fire and paste, with very few subclasses.
Jewelry was further divided into superior and common jewelry; the former produces eternal happiness and good fortune, while the latter is materia medica for prolonging life. This is further subdivided into melted and non-melted, the former capable of being melted by fire, such as gold, silver; while the latter cannot be so melted, such as jade, coral.
