Bursting time: Take five pills and examine the bursting time according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia:
Water pill: should all burst within one hour and pass through the sieve; a
butter pill and honey pill, extract pill should burst within 1.5 hours and pass
through the sieve. For bolus or pills to be melted by holding in the mouth, no such examination is needed.
Limit for error in weight
For medicines taken by weight, first use 20 pills divided into 10 groups and precisely weigh them separately. The average weight is calculated. The weight of each pill, as compared with the average weight, shouldn't double the standard or be over, and the number of out weighted pills shouldn't be over two pills. If 20 pills for examination are not available, then 10 pills are also feasible; but the
number of pills of wrong weight shouldn't exceed one, or double the weight error limit.
For coated pills, no examination for an error limit on weight should be made; however, the pills should pass this exam before coated.For medicinal oil pills, honey pills and sugar pills, the oil-honey and sugarshould first be processed.
For making medicinal oil: Take 30 pieces of Fructus Terminolia chebula, and 25 pieces each of Fructus Terminalia bellirica and Fructus Phyllanthi; 50g each of Radix Polygonati verticillata, Radix Asparagi, Radix Sphallerocarpi, Radix Mirabilis himalaica, Radix Tribulus, Radix Sphallerocarpi, Radix Mirabilis himalaica and Radix Tribulus; 75g of Rhizoma Gynnadenia; five pieces of pomegranate; 25g of Rhizoma Zimgiberis (dry), 55 g of Fructus Piper longi, 50g of Fructus Piper nigri, 150g of calcitum, 100g of "Bragzung," 25g each of Fmctus Elettaria cadamomi and Radix Aconitim stramineiflora, and 50g each of Semen Biotae, Herba Ephedra and Flos Rhododendron. Grind the above ingredients into powder, add 3-4 times of water and cook until one-third is left. Discard the residue and use the remaining solution to which 50g of melted butter and 500g of cow milk are added. Boil over a slow fire, stirring it to prevent it from scorching. When one-tenth of the water has evaporated, add 2kg of butter (note: for heat disorders, add butter from a cow or goat; for cold disorders, use butter from a yak or sheep). Boil again. When all the water is evaporated, filter. This is the medicinal oil now ready for use.
For making honey: Take 10kg of bee honey, 3kg of water, and mix thoroughly, and boil over a slow fire to evaporate all the water until the filament has formed. It is ready for use.
For making sugar: Take 5kg of brown sugar, lkg of bee honey and 5kg of water. Mix thoroughly and boil over a slow fire. When the water is totally gone and water drops can form a pearl when dropped on its surface, stir repeatedly until it forms a solid. Grind and it is ready for use.
