For the latter, there are three kinds: Deficient type, phlegmatic dampness and blood stasis types. Deficient type manifests mild, intermittent headache, while the other two (excessive) types reveal severe and persistent headache, which sometimes may deviate to one side as migraine.
a. Thick soup of elevated gastrodia tuber with pig's brain. 10 g of elevated gastrodia tuber is boiled with a whole pig's brain for 1 hour at a low heat. Discard the herbal residue and eat the brain and soup at one draught or divide into doses. This soup can be administered often and is good for migraine and nervous headaches.
b. Feather cockscomb seed drink. Soak 300 g feather cockscomb seeds in water and then boil at a low heat. Drain off the water after 20 minutes and then add more water. Repeat this process twice more. Mix the three solutions and concentrate by simmering until it becomes sticky. When cooled, add 400 g white sugar, mix thoroughly and dry in the sun. Then pulverize it into powder and keep in a bottle. Administer in 10 g doses dissolved in hot water, thrice daily.
c. Fish head with Gastrodia Elata: Slice Rhizoma Ligusticum Chuanxiong and poria, each 10 g, and put together with 25 g Gastrodia Elata into water in which rice has been washed for 4-6 hours. Take out the G-astrodia and steam it with rice. Then cut it into slices which are then put into the abdomen of a live carp with scales and viscera discarded. Add some shallot and ginger segments and then steam it for half an hour. This finishes the process and the fish is then served as a side dish.
d. Porridge of Chinese wolfberry fruit, chrysanthemum and glutinous rehmannia: This is for those headaches due to blood deficiency. Cook 15-30g processed glutinous rehrnanniae, 20-30 g wolfberry fruit with water to obtain concentrated solution. Divide it into 2 parts, each mixed with 100 g rice cooked as porridge. Infuse chrysanthemum with boiling water separately and mix it with the porridge just before it is well done. Before finishing cooking, put some rock sugar into the porridge and serve when the rocks dissolve completely.
e. Porridge of Chinese yam and pinellia tuber: This is suitable for headache of excessive type due to profuse phlegm. Boil 30 g pinellis tuber in 800 ml water to obtain a volume of 500 ml. Discard the residue and then put in 30 g powdered yam. Further boil and mix it with some sugar and serve.
