Don't Care About Common Cold Anymore!

In traditional Chinese medicine, common cold is divided into two types, cold-wind and hot-wind, which should be treated with different medicinal foods.

Common Cold,cold-wind type

cold-wind type: Manifestations are fever, chilliness without perspiration, headache, pains over the whole body, obstruction of nose (stuffy nose), nasal secretion (runny nose), white coated tongue, mildly quick pulse.
Prescriptions:

a. Decoction of ginger with sugar: 25 g of ginger, cleaned and sliced into small chips, then put into a bowl. Add boiling water and cover for 5-10 minutes. Add an equal amount (25 g) of brown sugar. Drink the decoction while hot, then cover up well, sleep and start to sweat.

b. Decoction of scallion and ginger: Scallion stalk and fresh ginger, 25 g each. Cut into small pieces. Prepare a small bowl of bean starch vermicelli, or rice or flour noodles with salt. Add the scallion and ginger pieces and eat. Then cover up well, sleep and start to sweat.

Hot-windtype: Manifestations are high fever, no chilliness, slight sweating, red eyes, sore throat, headache, slightly yellow coated tongue and rapid pulse. Prescriptions:

a. Chrysanthemum, peppermint and mulberry leaf drink: Chrysanthemum and mulberry leaves, 5 g each, bitter bamboo leaves and cogon root, 30g each, and peppermint, 3 g. Put all the ingredients in a bowl or cup, pour in boiling water and cover for 10 minutes. Drink the decoction like tea.

b. peppermint sweets: Boil 500 g cane sugar with a considerable amount of water at a low heat until it becomes sticky. Then slowly add 5 ml peppermint powder or peppermint oil and stir steadily until the mixture sticks to the stirring implement like threads. Pour the sugar into a big porcelain tray (coated with a thin layer of vegetable oil). Cut the hardened sugar into small pieces. Take several times daily for a mild common cold.

c. Decoction of scallion with fermented soybeans: Boil 10 g fermented soybeans in 200 ml water for 2-3 minutes. Then add 25 g scallion white bulbs sliced into small chips and serve. Drink the decoction and cover well for mild sweating.

d. Stir-fried chill with fermented soybeans: Stir-fry separately chilli and fermented soybeans, each 250 g. Then mix them together and add some salt. This is a tasty dish and can be served for regular meals as side dish, especially for porridge.

e. Cold turnip slivers: Cut 500 g turnip into fine slivers. Add some sesame oil, salt and monosodium glutamate and serve as a side dish. No vinegar should be added. This is especially good for cases with profuse sputum excretion.
