With Excess Fecal Water
Osmotic diarrhea Excess water soluble molecules in the bowel lumen cause osmotic retention of intraluminal water.
Secretory diarrhea Excessive active ion secretion by the mucosal cells of the intestine.Deletion or interference with normal ion absorption This is usually a congenital problem.

Exudative disease-Abnormal mucosal permeability with intestinal loss of serum proteins, blood, mucus or pus.

Impaired contact between intestinal chyme and absorbing surface--Rapid transit, short bowel syndromes. Without excess fecal water frequent, small, painful evacuations are usually are sult of disease of the left colon or rectum.

In traditional Chinese medicine, diarrhea is divided into 5 types:
Heat diarrhea. Due to the invasion of a pathogenic heat factor into the large intestine. The chief symptoms are diarrhea with very foul mucoid stools, borborygmus, abdominal pains, burning sensation of the anus, scanty dark urine, thirst.

Cold diarrhea. Caused by an invasion of the pathogenic cold factor into the gastrointestinal tract. The chief symptoms are watery stools with indigested food, vague abdominal pain, pale urine.

Damp diarrhea. Characterized by a sense of heaviness of the body, chest distress, no thirst, little abdominal pain, loose stools, scanty dark urine, mucoid glossy coating of the tongue, etc.

Food diarrhea. Caused by improper or contaminated diet. Clinically it is manifested as belching, regurgitation of acid, poor appetite, distress of the chest and epigastrium, and abdominal pain followed and relieved by diarrhea.

Early morning diarrhea. This type of diarrhea occurs just before dawn and is caused by deficiency of the kidney-Yang.
