No. 5 Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ) 9 g;

Administration Decoct the above drugs for oral use.
Actions: Clearing away heat and toxic material and expelling heat and nourishing yin.

Clinical Application: This recipe is indicated for invasion of yingfen by pathogenic heat at the early stage, marked by feverish body which aggravates at night, delirium occurring now and then, thirst or absence of thirst, indistinct skin rashes, deep-red and dry tongue, thready and rapid pulse.

It is applicable to epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, hematosepsis, ileotyphus or other epidemic diseases that are attributable to pathogenic heat invading yingfen. In case heat in qifen is not wiped out manifesting high fever and thirst, use Baihu Tang together with this recipe to achieve the effect of clearing away heat from both qifen and yingfen. In case of heat obstructing the heart meridian manifesting delirium, Angong Niuhuang Wan can be taken with this decoction.

Elucidation: This syndrome is the result of pathogenic heat invading yingfen, scorching ying-yin and injuring blood vessels, for which the method of clearing away heat and toxin and nourishing yin should be adopted. Ingredient No. 1 is very good at clearing away heat from yingfen, functioning as monarch drug. Ingredients No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 act as minister drug, which not only help the monarch drug to purge away heat but also nourish yin and promote the production of body fluid.

Cautions: Since ingredients No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 in this recipe are sweet in flavor and cool and moist in nature, it is not applicable to patients manifesting deep-red tongue with whitish glossy fur, which is attributable to syndrome of retained heat due to blockage of dampness.
