The symptoms of this condition are dark purple blood vomited from the stomach, mixed with food debris or in a large amount. It can be divided into 2 types: Patients with accumulation of heat in the stomach may suffer from distension and pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting of fresh red or purple blood with or without food debris, foul smell from the mouth and constipation; patients with attack of liver fire to the stomach may suffer from vomiting of fresh red or purple blood, pain in the flanks, restlessness, anger, bitter taste in the mouth and insomnia.

Hematemesis often occurs in cases of peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, cirrhosis of the liver and stomach cancer in Western medicine.

Recipe 1: One overgrown loofah.
Administration: The loofah is boiled in water to prepare a tea for constant drinking.
Indication: The loofah tea can clear fire pathogens from the stomach and control bleeding to treat vomiting of fresh red blood due to injury to blood vessels in the stomach.

Recipe 2: An adequate amount of orange juice and juice of lotus root and Sanqi (notoginseng) 10 gm.
Administration: Powder of Sanqi is dissolved in the mixed juice for oral intake with warm Indication: This recipe can clear fire from the liver and stomach to treat hematemesis with pain in the flanks due to attack of liver fire to the stomach.

Recipe 3: Lily flower 100 gm and an adequate amount of brown sugar.
Administration: A water decoction of the above materials is prepared for oral administration.
Indication: The lily flower decoction may be used as a supplementary treatment for other therapies for patients with vomiting of a small amount of blood due to accumulation of heat in the stomach.
