No. 3 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ) 6 g;
No. 4 Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) 6 g;
No. 5 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 6 g;
No. 6 Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparatae) 6 g;
No. 7 Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari)12g.
Administration: Grind the above drugs into coarse powder before decocting in water for oral application, 15 g each time.
Actions: Nourishing yin, clearing away heat, consolidating the superficies and arresting perspiration.
Clinical Application: The recipe is indicated for night sweat from hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency, marked by fever, night sweat, flushed face, vexation, dryness of the mouth and lips, constipation, reddened tongue and rapid pulse. Clinically such physical signs should be considered as night sweat, flushed face, reddened tongue and rapid pulse. In case of deficiency of yin without dominant fire of excess type, Ingredients No. 5 and No. 3 can be replaced with Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) to purge fire without impairing yin. In case of incessant sweating, Fuxiaomai (Fructus Tritici Levis) and Duanmuli (Concha Ostreae) (calcined) can be added to enhance the effect of arresting perspiration.
Elucidation: The syndrome results from disturbance of fire due to deficiency of yin, leading to the excretion of yin fluid. It should be treated by nourishing yin, purging fire, and consolidating superficial resistance to arrest perspiration. Ingredients No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 are used as monarch drug to nourish yin and blood, and restrain yang by nourishing yin. Ingredients No. 5, No. 3 and No. 4 function as minister drug to purge fire, and relieve vexation. The doubled dosage of No. 7 is meant to supplement qi to strengthen body resistance, and to arrest perspiration, acting as adjuvant drug.
