Radix Paeoniae Alba

Main symptoms and signs: Dull epigastralgia with burning sensation, polydipsia with desire for drink, dry mouth and throat, poor appetite, constipation, red tongue with a little or no fur, thready and rapid or wiry and rapid pulse.

Therapeutic methods: Tonifying the stomach and nourishing yin.
Prescription and drugs: The prescription used is the modified Yiwei Decoction (Stomach-nourishing Decoction) composed of 10 g Shashen (Radix Glehniae), 10 g of Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), 8 g of Yuzhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), 10 g of Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae) , ]2 g of Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), 3 g of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) and 10 g of Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae).

Modification: For the patients with severe epigastric distension and pain, 6 g of Houpohua (Flos Magnoliae Officinalis), 5 g of Foshou (Fructus Citri Sarcodactylis) and 8 g of Meiguihua (Fols Rosae Rugosae) are added; for the patients with constipation, l0 g of Huomaren (Fructus Cannabis) and 10 g of Gualouren (Semen Trichosanthis) are included; for the patients with burning pain, 6 g of Zhuye (Herba Lophatheri) and 15 g of Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) are added.
