This is an acute disease with pale complexion, fever, hot or damp cold skin, restlessness and rapid pulse or with coma and convulsion in severe cases occurring in the hot summer season. It can be divided into 3 types: Patients of summer stroke due to attack of summer heat pathogens to the Yangming meridians may suffer from headache, dizziness, flushed face, rough breath, thirst and profuse sweating; patients with attack of summer heat pathogens to the pericardium may suffer from sudden falling down, loss of consciousness, hot body and cold limbs, rough breath and slightly locked jaw; and patients with excess of summer heat pathogens may suffer from high fever, convulsions, opisthotonus, locked jaw and mental confusion.
Recipe 1: Green watermelon skin 30 g, fresh Zhuru (bamboo shavings) 30 pieces, fresh lotus stem 25 g, American ginseng 10 g, Maidong (lilyturf root) 10 g and rice 10 g.
Administration: The watermelon skin, Zhuru, lotus stem and Maidong are washed clean and boiled with rice in water to prepare a decoction, and the ginseng is boiled in water to produce a concentrated juice. The herbal decoction and ginseng juice are mixed together for drinking as a tea, 2-3 times a day for 3 days.
Indication: This recipe can clear heat, eliminate summer heat pathogens, enrich Qi and produce saliva to treat summer stroke due to invasion of summer heat pathogens into Yangming meridians and wasting of Qi and body fluid.
Recipe 2: White gourd 500 g, Yiyiren (Job's tears) 30 g and a duck.
Administration: Cubes of duck meat, peeled white gourd and Yiyiren are boiled together to make a soup for oral intake.
Indication: This soup can be used to treat summer stroke due to invasion of summer heat pathogens into the Yangming meridians.
Recipe 3: White gourd 100 g and one lotus leaf.
Administration: A decoction of white gourd and lotus leaf is drunk.
Indication: This recipe is used to treat summer stroke due to attack of summer heat pathogens to the pericardium and blockage of Qi circulation.
Recipe 4: One fresh bitter gourd and green tea leaves 3 g.
Administration: The bitter gourd with the pulp removed is cut into small pieces and boiled with green tea leaves in water to prepare a tea for drinking.
Indication: This tea can clear heat from the heart, open the orifices of the sense organs and induce resuscitation to treat summer stroke due to attack of summer heat pathogens to the pericardium.
