Milk and water are the important traditional medicines widely applied. Cow's milk is sweet. It creates a robust and ruddy complexion and adds luster to the body.Since its nature is cool and heavy, it produces badkan. Cows milk cures pulmonary tuberculosis, dizziness, coughing, thirst and hunger polyuria; goat's milk is light in nature and is applied for difficulty in breathing, diarrhea, and bleeding due to febrile disorders. Raw milk is heavy and cool. Newly squeezed milk is highly nutritious like nectar (manna). However, pure milk is difficult to digest.
Water is also an important remedy in Tibetan medicine, the following being commonly used: rainwater, snow water, river water, well water, seawater and water from forests. Among them, rainwater is of best quality as it falls from the
sky. During its process of falling, it comes into contact with sunlight, moonlight, and wind. Hence, it is full of vitality and refreshes the mind, and is as light as manna. It is better collected in a spacious field with clean containers. Its
remedial action is quite satisfactory. Turbid rainwater can't be used for therapeutic purposes, because it is mixed with other substances and doesn't have contact with sunlight or moonlight, and hence is not a quality remedy.
Cool water can be used for treating alcoholism, coma, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Boiled cool water is light and effective for mkhris pa disorders.
Tibetan medicine claims that alcohol is helpful to digestion and the digestive fire. Its nature is sweet, sour, and acrid. It is effective for insomnia. Appropriate drinking is beneficial to the health, and old wine is useful in rlung and badkan
disorders. However, excessive drinking is not encouraged for intoxication is unavoidable.
