Wind cold type. The patient complains of chills, headache, nasal obstruction,thin nasal discharge, rapid shallow breathing and flapping of alae nasi. His mouth iskept open with difficulty in breathing and the shoulders become elevated and he is
unable to lie flat. On examination, the tongue is found covered with white coating and the pulse is smooth and rapid.
The principle of management is to remove the wind, expel the cold, eliminatethe phlegm and calm asthma. The formula of first choice is Xiao Qin Lun Tang Jia Jian.

Chinese ephedra 6g
Cassia (twig) 10g
Wildginger (whole plant) 2g
Pinellia (tuber) 12g
Fruit of Chinese magnoliavine 12g
Dried ginger (rhizome) 10g
Blackberry lily (rhizome) 10g
Root of herbaceous peony 12g
Bulb of fritillary 10g
Tatarian aster (root) 24g
Common coltsfoot flower 10g
Apricot kernel 12g
Decoction and dosage. All the above herbs make a dose and six to ten doses are prescribed with one dose daily. Each dose is simmered twice and then the broth of each mixed, half of the mixed broth each time, twice a day.
Pulmonary heat type. This type is characterized by cough with yellowish mucoid phlegm and rapid shallow breathing which is performed with effort or even with flapping of alae nasi. Phlegm stagnation type. The typical features of this type are feelings of suppression in the chest and abundant thin whitish phlegm which is easily coughed up. On examination, the tongue is found covered with slippery and mucoid white coating and the pulse is slippery.

Chinese radish seed 18g
Seed of welsh-onion 12-20g
Tatarian aster (root) 15-30g
