Clearing Away Stomach Heat
Ingredients:
No. 1 Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae) 12 g;
No. 2 Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 6 g;
No. 3 Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis) 9 g
No. 4 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 3 - 5 g;
No. 5 Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 6 g.

Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water for oral administration.
Actions: Purging stomach-heat and cooling blood.

Clinical Application: This recipe is indicated for toothache due to fire in the stomach, marked by headache arising from toothache, feverish cheeks, aversion to heat with preference for cold, or gingival bleeding, or ulceration in the gum, or swelling and soreness of the tongue lips and cheeks, or hot and foul breath, dryness of mouth and tongue, red tongue with yellowish fur, smooth and rapid pulse. It is applicable to stomatitis, periodontitis, and prosopalgia, etc. with the chief symptoms of toothache and gingival swelling due to the flare-up of stomach- fire.

In case of impairment of body fluid due to excessive heat manifesting thirst and preference for cold drinks, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Rhizorna Anemarrhenae) can be added to dispel fire from the stomach and promote the production of body fluid to quench thirst. In case of much gingival bleeding due to excessive fire in the stomach, it is advisable to add Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Biclentatae) to ensure proper downward flow of heat and the blood. If complicated with constipation, Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) may be added to relax the bowels for purging heat.

Elucidation: The syndrome is due to upward attack by stomach-heat along yangming meridian of foot. It should be treated by clearing away stomach-fire and cooling blood to subdue swelling. Ingredient No. 4 is used as monarch drug to clear away fire in the stomach. Ingredients No. 1 and No. 3 are used as minister drug, capable of cooling blood and purging heat. While ingredient No. 2, as adjuvant drug, has tile effects of nourishing blood and promoting blood circulation, subduing swelling and alleviating pain. Ingredient No. 5 can dispel fire and remove toxin, and functions as guiding drug, leading various ingredients directly to the yangming meridian.
Cautions: It is not fit for toothache due to wind-cold or hyperactivity of fire due to deficiency of the kidney.
