Diarrhea is a condition with frequent bowel movement discharging thin or watery stool due to dysfunction of the spleen and stomach or excess of dampness. It can be divided into 4 types: Patients of cold dampness or wind-cold type may suffer from passage of thin or watery stool, abdominal pain, chills and fever; patients of damp-heat or summer dampness type may suffer from urgent defecation to pass yellowish brown and foul stool, tenesmus and burning sensation in the anus; patients of food stagnation in the stomach and intestines type may suffer from passage of dirty and very foul stool with indigested food, abdominal pain relievable after defecation, increase of intestinal gurgling sound and poor appetite; patients of deficiency of the spleen and stomach type may suffer from intermittent diarrhea with indigested food induced by intake of greasy food, poor appetite and abdominal distension; and patients of deficiency of kidney Yang type may suffer from diarrhea in the early morning after an episode of abdominal pain and intestinal gurgling sound, relievable after defecation, and soreness and coldness in the waist and knees.

Diarrhea is an important symptom of acute or chronic enteritis, tuberculosis of the intestines and gastric or intestinal neurosis in Western medicine.

Recipe 1: An adequate amount of leek with roots.
Administration: The leek is washed clean and chopped and squeezed to produce a juice of 100 ml for drinking with warm boiled water, 2-3 times a day for 3-5 days.

Indication: The leek can warm the kidneys and enrich Yang to treat uncontrollable diarrhea with abdominal distension, vomiting and hatred of coldness due to deficiency of kidney Yang. According to modern pharmacological studies, leek can control diarrhea because it can inhibit the growth of Bacillus dysenteriae, Bacillus typhosus, Bacillus coli and Bacillus proteus.

Recipe 2: Leek 250 g, cow milk 250 g and fresh ginger 25 g.
Administration: The leek is washed clean, and chopped and squeezed to produce a juice. This is boiled with milk for oral administration, twice a day for several days.
Indication: This recipe is used to treat diarrhea due to accumulation of liver Qi and deficiency of the spleen. and ground to prepare a powder. Then the powder is pounded.
