Introduction Of Infantile Malnutrition

Malnourished Child

Infantile malnutrion, a chronic disease, is caused by the impairment of the spleen and stomach, and the consumption of qi and body fluid due to improper feeding or the consequence of suffering from diseases. Clinically, the disease is marked by emaciation, sallow complexion, dried and withered hair, abnormal diet, listlessness or dysphoria. Infantile malnutrition refers to two conditions, one refers to the fact that the cause of disease is the impairment of the spleen and stomach due to excessive infantile ingestion of fat and sweet food; the other refers to the fact that the pathogenesis and symptoms are consumption of qi and body fluid, and emaciation respectively. Ancient physicians classified the infantile disease as one of the 4 major pediatric deseases. The disease is similar to "infantile malnutrition" and"vitamin deficiency" in modem medicine. The slow onset and long course of disease seriously affect infantile growth and development, possibly giving rise to several complications.

Infantile spleen is constantly insufficient in function. Besides, the infantile excessive ingestion of fat and sweet food due to the ignorance of controlling the diet, or improper feeding may cause the gastric inability to receive more food and the splenic dysfunction in transportation and tranformation. If the situation lasts long, qi and body fluid will be consumed, giving rise to emaciation and infantile malnutrition; or the chronic infantile disease as well as the improper care after the recovery impairs the spleen and stomach, causes qi and blood to lose nourishment, resulting in infantile malnutrition. In addition, the kidney is the congenital base of life while the spleen and stomach are the acquired one. If the kidney is congenitally weak, or the spleen and stomach are postnatally unhealthy, the insufficent intake of cereal essence may bring about malnutrition, too.
