Patients with vomiting due to attack of external pathogens to the stomach may suffer from sudden vomiting, fever, chills and chest distress; patients due to stagnation of food may suffer from vomiting of sour and putrefied food, abdominal distension, anorexia and belching; patients due to stagnation of phlegm and rheum may suffer from vomiting of clear sputum and saliva, abdominal distension and vertigo; patients due to attack of liver Qi to the stomach may suffer from vomiting of sour and putrefied food, repeated belching, pain in and distension of the chest and flanks; patients due to deficiency and coldness of the spleen and stomach may suffer from intermittent vomiting after eating more food, pale complexion, cold limbs and diarrhea; and patients due to deficiency of stomach Yin may suffer from vomiting with or without vomitus and dryness of the mouth and throat.
Vomiting is a common symptom of neurogenic vomiting, gastritis, pyloric spasm or stenosis and cholecystitis in Western medicine.
Recipe 1: Fried slices of haw 3 gm, fried Maiya (germinated wheat) 10 gm and an adequate amount of brown sugar.
Administration: The haw slices and Maiya are boiled to prepare a decoction for oral intake with sugar twice a day for several days.
Indication: This recipe can promote digestion, release stagnation of,food and adjust the stomach to stop vomiting due to stagnation of food.
Recipe 2: Haw 15 gm and Shenqu (fermented herbal mixture) 15 gm.
Administration: A decoction of the above herbs is orally administered twice a day.
Indication: This decoction is used to treat vomiting due to stagnation of food.
Recipe 3: Haw 15 gin, Guya (fermented rice) 10 gin, Maiya (fermented wheat) 10 gm and Huoxiang (giant-hyssop) 6 gin.
Administration: The first 3 herbs are boiled in water for a while, and then the Huoxiang is added to produce a decoction for drinking twice a day.
Indication: This recipe is used to treat vomiting due to stagnation of food with mental and physical tiredness and dirty greasy tongue coating.
Recipe 4: Fresh pomegranate skin 1,000 gm (or dry skin 500 gm) and honey 300 gm.
Administration: The pomegranate skin is cut into small cubes and boiled in water to obtain a portion of decoction and the pomegranate dregs are boiled in water again to obtain a second decoction. The two decoctions are mixed together and boiled again over a slow fire to prepare a syrup with honey for oral intake of one spoonful, twice a day for several days. The syrup may be stored in a bottle.
Indication: This syrup can warm the spleen and stomach, expel cold pathogens, control vomiting and stop diarrhea to treat repeated vomiting and diarrhea in patients with cold limbs due to deficiency and coldness of the spleen and stomach.
