It was said that Tara Bodhisattva advised Bi ji dga' byed and Bi dga' lha mdzes to spread medicine to Tibet when he was in Bodhighaya. This was during the reign of King Lha tho tho ri gnyen btsan. When the two legendary figures came to the snow lands, they saw one day a lady carrying an old woman on her back walking out of a house.
"Why do you carry that old woman,?"
"She is my mum, and she is ill," the woman replies.
"Since she is your mother and is ill, you shouldn't carry her out of the house. Carry her back inside."
The lady replies: "This is the custom of Tibet. If you let her stay at home, the smell from her body would make us all and the house god will be enraged."
"Do you have tutelary here? Do you have physician? Can he treat the sick?"
"We have Amithaba, we have the six-character motto on ma ni Pao Mi Hong. We have therapy by diet, stopping bleeding by melted fresh butter. Our parents can treat diseases," the lady explains. "Is it customary for Tibetans to always carry patients outdoors?" "When the children are diseased, the parents do not carry them outdoors.""You shouldn't carry the diseased outside. Medical knowledge and religion have just come to Tibet, which are unknown here."
