Asthma occurs repeatedly due to internal and external Causes, and it is divided into stage of attack and remission stage in syndrome differentiation.

At the stage of attack, the disease is often divided into cold asthma and heat asthma according to different natures of pathogenic factors. Cold asthma often manifests cough with short breath, throat tale, whitish-thin-frothy sputum, and accompanied by exterior syndrome of wind and cold. Heat asthma often manifests cough, asthma with wheezing, sonorous voice and short breath, yellowish thick-sputum, fever, chest distress, showing the syndrome of phlegm and heat obstructing the lung.

The therapeutic principle of asthma lies in eliminating pathogenic factors to treat secondary symptoms at the stage of attack. The therapeutic methods include warming the lung to eliminate sputum and asthma, clearing away heat from the lung, eliminating phlegm and asthma according to the state of pathogenic cold or heat. At the remission stage, the therapeutic methods include removing the latent sputum inside the body by strengthening the lung, spleen and kidney to prevent asthma.

Main symptoms and signs Cough with wheezing, throat rale, profuse-thin-whitish-frothy sputum, cold body, anhirosis, cold lower limbs or thin nasal discharge, dim and sluggish complexion, reddish tongue with thin-whitish or whitish-greasy tongue coating, floating and slippery pulse.

Therapeutic methods Warming the lung, resolving sputum and eliminating asthma.
Prescription and drugs The prescription used is the modified Xiaoqinglong Decoction composed of 4 g of Zhimahuang (Herba Ephedrae Praeparata), 6 g of Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), 6 g of Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 3 g of Xixin (Herba Asari), 4 g of Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis), 6 g of Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), 10 g of Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) , 10 g of Ziwan (Radix et Rhizoma Asteris) and 3 g of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae).
