The Red Date

This is a disease with cough and spitting of turbid sputum and foamy saliva due to lung collapse. It can be divided into 2 types: Patients with the deficient heat type may suffer from cough with dull voice, spitting of thick and sticky sputum and foamy saliva, shortness of breath, dryness of throat, leanness of body and red tongue proper; and patients with deficient cold type may suffer from spitting of profuse, clear and thin sputum and foamy saliva, no thirst, dizziness, shortness of breath, aversion to cold, cold limbs, mental tiredness, physical weakness, poor appetite, pale tongue proper and feeble pulse.

This disease is correspondent to atelectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary sclerosis and pneumosilicosis in Western medicine.

Recipe 1: Fresh pumpkin 500 gm, red date 15-20 pieces and an adequate amount of brown sugar.
Administration: The peeled pumpkin is cut into small pieces, and boiled with dates and sugar for oral intake according to the appetite until the pumpkin becomes soft.
Indication: This recipe can warm and tonify lung Qi to treat lung collapse of deficient cold type.

Recipe 2: Red date 10 pieces, Chenpi (Tangerine peel) 5-10 gm, Maidong (lilyturf root) 15-20 gm, sugared ginseng 10 gm and rice 100 gm.
Administration: The date, tangerine peel and Maidong are washed clean and boiled with ginseng twice, and the decoction is used to make gruel for oral intake according to the appetite, twice a day. The ginger can be used again on the second day.

Indication: The rice gruel can be used to treat lung collapse of deficient heat type with spitting of sticky sputum, shortness of breath, and dryness of tongue and mouth cavity
