Common cold is a commonly encountered exogenous disease during the infancy, mainly caused by exogenous pathogenic factors and clinically marked by fever, aversion to cold, nasal obstruction, running nose, sneezing and cough. This morbid condition pertains to acute infection of the upper respiratory tract in modern medicine andis known as influenza if it spreads. Common cold may occur at any time in a year, especially in the winter andspring. It is often due to the infection of virus. Mter theinfection of the virus, the resistance of the mucosa overthe upper respiratory tract becomes weak and may lead tosecondary bacterial infection. Common cold may also result in secondary bronchitis and pneumonia, prolongingthe course of the disease or worsening the disease.

The cause of common cold lies in the fact that the infantile viscera are delicate and wei-qi (defensive qi) isweak. Furthermore, the infants are unable to take care ofthemselves in adaptation to the changes of the weather,giving rise to the attack by exogenous wind, cold, heatand summerheat.
