Main symptoms and signs Serious chills, mild fever, anhidrosis, stuffy nose, heavy voice, sneezing, thin nasal discharge, itching throat, cough, expectoration of thin sputum, thin and whitish tongue fur. In the elder infants the main complaints may be headache, general discomfort, no thirst or preference to hot drinks, and thepulse may be floating and tense.

The pulmonary qi may fail to disperse, therefore leading to such lung meridian symptoms as fever, aversion to cold orwind, cough, stuffy nose, sneezing, sore-throat and running nose. Since the infants are characterized by delicacy
of viscera, constant insufficiency of the spleen and suscep tibility to the hyperactivity of the heart and liver fire, the occurrence of common cold is usually complicated by other disorders, such as retention of phlegm, stasis and convulsion. If the infant is weak in the lung, spleen and wei-qi,the common cold may occur repeatedly. Such a morbid,condition is known as common cold of deficiency syndrome.

If there are accompanied symptoms, they are usually vomiting, diarrhea orhigh fever, convulsion and syncope.
Common cold may occur at any time in a year,especially in winter and spring, often caused by sudden change of weather.

The general symptoms are serious. If it spreads,it is known as influenza. Repeated occurrence of common cold usually indicates common cold of deficiency type.

Differentiation of syndrome and treatment Syndrome differentiation of common cold varies according to the exogenous pathogenic factors involved.Clinically common cold is classified into common cold due to wind and cold, common cold due to wind and heat,common cold due to summer-heat and dampness.
