Juhua Flos Chrysanthemi
The source is from the capitulum of the perennial herbaceous plant, Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat, family Compositae. The producing areas are mainly in the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, and Henan, etc.. The medicinal material is collected in the end of autumn and early stage of winter, dried in shade for medication.
Medicinal Properties Pungent, bitter and sweet in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the lung and liver meridians.
Actions Expel wind and clear away heat, clear liver-fire to treat eye disease, and eliminate toxic sub-stances.
Application
1. For exogenous disease due to wind and heat or early stage of seasonal febrile disease manifested as fever, headache and cough, it is usually used together with Sang-ye ( Folium Mori ), Bohe ( Herba Menthae ), and Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae ), etc., such as Sang Ju Yin (Decoction).
2. It is used for red, swollen and painful eyes and blurred vision whether the syndrome is asthenic or sthenic. For redish, swollen and painful eyes due to wind and heat attacking liver meridian or flaming-up of the exuberant liver-fire, it is usually combined with Sangye (Folium Mori ) , Juemingzi ( Semen Cassiae ), and Longdan (Radix Gentianae), etc.. For deficiency of the liver and kidney with blurred vision, it can be used together with Gouqizi ( Fructus Lycii ), Shudihuang ( Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata ), and Shanzhuyu ( Fructgs Corni), etc., such as Qi Ju Dihuang Wan (Pill).
3. For dizziness and headache due to hyperactivity of liver-yang, it can be used together with Shijueming ( Con-cha Haliotidis ), Baishaoyao ( Radix Paeoniae Alba ), and Gouteng (Ramulus Uncarriae cum Uncis), etc..
4. It is used for furuncle and especially for furunculosis. The fresh form can be pounded into juice for oral use and the left dregs can be covered on the affected site; or it can be combined wtih Zihuadiding (Herba Violae ), Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci), etc..
Usage and Dosage 5 -9 g is used in decoction for oral use; or soaked in boiling water as tea for oral use; used externally with suitable amount.
