Insomnia affects millions of Americans. Just one night of bad sleep can decrease productivity by 30%... imagine how much decreased productivity there is in people who never get a good night's sleep - not to mention increased irritability, traffic accidents from people falling asleep at the wheel or simply not alert, obesity, diabetes, cancer - all linked to not getting enough sleep.
Besides acupuncture of course, how can you help insomnia? It may sound obvious, but avoid caffeine. This can be a vicious cycle, because as you aren't able to sleep at night, morning grogginess makes you reach for that double-or even triple- latte. The effects of caffeine can linger for longer than you think, even to the point of making it difficult to fall asleep. Caffeine is also hidden in foods that you may be consuming without realizing it.
Chocolate, soda, herbal supplements, protein bars and weight-loss products may contain caffeine. Sometimes the solution to insomnia is resolved by simply reading food labels and cutting down on caffeine intake. Having an evening routine that involves an hour of rest before going to bed is also helpful. Take a bath, read a book, or have a cup of chamomile tea - all great ways to relax before bedtime. If you are an evening tv person, avoid watching the news- negative images before bed don't bode well for a nice, restful sleep.
Do you work or read in bed? Move these activities to other areas of your home, reserve the bedroom for sleeping and sexual activity only. Herbal supplements can be helpful as well - chamomile, Valerian and lemon balm are all effective.
