The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has released the statistics to coincide with its Chest Pain Awareness Day, which is aimed at educating the public to the signs of heart attacks.

Of the 101,000 CHD deaths, almost all were from heart attacks with about a third of these deaths, nearly 33,000, in people aged under 75, making CHD the most common cause of premature death in the UK.

The awareness day is a part of the BHF's ongoing 'Doubt Kills' campaign, urging people experiencing chest pain - or other heart attack symptoms such as breathlessness, nausea or pain in the jaw, neck, arm or back that spreads to the chest - to call 999 immediately.

As part of the awareness day, the BHF is re-running its advert showing an image of a man with a belt around his chest and delivering leaflets to more than three million homes across the UK.

The charity has also produced a podcast telling the story of Alec Keep, one of nine people who say the advert prompted them to seek medical help sooner than they would have.
