
In needling all the acupoints on the arteries, the arteries should be avoided.
3. 5. 4. 1 Acupoints on the upper arm
The acupoints are needled perpendicularly or obliquely 0.5 - 1.5 cun.
Jugu (LI 16)--It is needled obliquely and posteriorly downward 0.5 - 1 cun.
Jianyu (LI 15)--It is needled perpendicularly or ob-liquely downward 0.5 - 1.5 cun.
Binao (LI 14)--It is needled perpendicularly or ob-liquely upward 0.5 - 1.5 cun.
Jianliao (TE 14)-It is needled perpendicularly to the shoulder 1 - 1.5 cun.
Jiquan (HT 1)--It is needled perpendicularly about 0.5 cun, avoiding the arteries.
3. 5. 4. 2 Acupoints on the forearm
These acupoints are usually needled perpendicularly or obliquely 0.5 - 1.2 cun. The acupoints near the wrist are usually needled perpendicularly 0.3 - 0.5 cun.
The median nerve is in the deeper layer of the pericardium meridian of hand-jueyin. The electric shock-like sensation transmitting to the finger tips indicates the median nerve is punctured, the needle must be withdrawn immediately lest the median nerve be impaired. The oc-currence of such electric shock-like sensation must be dealt with in time.
Quchi (LI 11 ) It is needled perpendicularly 1 - 1.5 cun.
Lieque (LU 7)--It is needled obliquely towards the elbow 0.3 - 0.5 cun.
Pianli (LI 6) and Yanglao (SI 6)--They are needled perpendicularly or obliquely 0.5 - 0.8 cun.
3. 5. 4. 3 Acupoints on the thigh
These acupoints are usually needled perpendicularly 1-2 cun. Those on the buttocks can be needled 2 - 3 cun.
Huantiao (GB 30) It is needled perpendicularly 2 -3 cun. If the sciatic nerve is punctured, there appears electric shock-like sensation transmitting to the heel.
3. 5. 4. 4 Acupoints on the leg
These acupoints are usually needled perpendicularly 0.5 - 2 cun. Those near the ankle are needled perpendicu-larly 0.5 - 1 cun.
Xiyan (EX-LE 5)--It is needled 0.5 - 1 cun obliquely towards the knee.
Weizhong (BL 40 )--It is needled perpendicularly 0.5 -1 cun or pricked for bloodletting.
Zusanli (ST 36) It is needled perpendicularly 1 -2 cur.
Sanyinjiao (SP 6)--It is needled 1 - 1.5 cun perpen-dicularly and slightly posteriorly.
3. 5. 4. 5 Acupoints on the hand and foot
These acupoints are needled perpendicularly or obliquely; the depth of insertion is usually 0.3 -1 cun; the depth for the acupoints on the tip of the fingers or toes is about 0.1 cun.
Hegu (LI 4)--It is needled perpendicularly 0.5 - 1cun.
Laogong (PC 8)--It is needled perpendicularly O. 3-0. 5 cun.
Taichong (LR 3)--It is needled 0.5 - 1 cun perpen-dicularly or obliquely upwards.
The needling sensation of the above three acupoints is strong, so the manipulations should not be too forceful.
Chongyang (ST 42) It is needled perpendicularly 0.3 -0.5 cun, avoiding the arteries.
In addition, Hegu (LI 4), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Jian-jing (GB 21), Kunlun (BL 60), Zhiyin (BL 67) are effec-tive in promoting blood circulation and menstrual flow
when needled. So these acupoints should not be needled in the gravida.
