Acute and Chronic Nephritis

Nephritis is divided into acute and chronic nephritis, both of which are clinically characterized by edema, proteinuria and hypertension. Acute nephritis in most cases falls into the category of "feng shui" (wind edema) and "yang shui" (yang-type edema); while chronic nephritis in most cases falls into the category of "zheng shui" (anasarca with shortness of breath), "shi shui" (stony edema) and "yin shui" (yin-type edema). Medicated diet, as an auxiliary treatment, has a positive effect on both the improvement of symptoms of the disease and the recovery of the organism.
1. Common Types of Syndromes
Clinical manifestations of acute nephritis and chronic nephritis are different from cach other, so are their types of symdromes.
Acute Nephritis
1) Attack of Wind-Cold on the Lung and Stagnation of Qi in the Triple-jiao Manifested as aversion to cold, fever, cough, dyspnea, edema of the face and extremities, or ac-companied with stuffiness sensation in the chest, thirst, oliguria with tawny urine, dry stools, thin and white fur, floating and tense pulse or deep and thready pulse.
2) Retention of Wind-Heat in the Lung and Accumulation of Dampness and Toxic Materials Manifested as head-ache, fever, swelling and sore throat, thirst and desire for drink, mild edema of the face and extremities at the onset, serious edema gradually developed, oliguria with dark urine and difficult urination, dry stool, red tongue with white fur with yellow center deep and slippery and rapid pulse.
3) Toxic Heat Attacking the Interior Causing Damage to the Tin-Blood Manifested as swelling of pharyngooral isthmus with running-sore on the back wall, or swelling of tonsil, or mild edema, dry mouth, oliguria with dark urine and difficult urination, er blood in the urine which is the same in color as the water that has been used to wash meat, red tongue, deep and thready and rapid pulse.
Chronic Nephritis
1) Overflow of Water in the Body due to Insufficiency of both the Spleen-yang and the Kidney-yang Manifested as pale or sallow complexion, heavy edema of the whole body, abdominal distention so severe as if the abdomen were a drum, cool limbs and aversion to cold, poor appetite, loose stools, oliguria, light-colored urine, aching pain in the waist, pale but corpulent tongue with teeth marks on its margin, thin and white fur, deep and thready pulse or deep and slow pulse.
2) Insufficiency of both the Spleen and the Kidney with Deficiency of Essence and Blood Manifested as pale and luster-less complexion, mental and bodily tiredness, lassitude in the loins and knees, albuminuria, pale tongue, weak pulse.
3) Hyperactivity of the Liver-yang due to Deficiency of both the Liver-yin and the Kidney-yin Marked by dizziness, headache, poor vision, tinnitus, dysphorria with feverish sensation in the chest, palms and soles, dry mouth, desire for drinking water, restlessness in sleeping, lassitude in the loins and legs, red tongue with white fur, wiry, thready and rapid pulse.
2. Dietetic Chinese Drugs
1) Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) Get one black carp (1000--1500g in weight), cut it open, remove its internal organs, wrap it with mud and roast it in burning charcoal fire until white smoke comes out, then take it out and grind it into powder when it gets cool. It is to be taken with warm boiled water, 3 times a day, 2 spoonfuls each time. One carp makes up one dose. Table salt should be avoided. It is a very potent antihydropic agent, applicable to patients suffering from acute nephritis marked by the type of attack of wind-cold on the lung and stagnation of qi in the triple-jiao, or from chronic nephritis manifested as the type of overflow of water within the; body due to insufficiency of both the spleen-yang and the kidney-yang.
2) Corn stigma (Stigma Maydis) ¡®Decoct 50g of corn stigma in 600ml of water for 20 to 30 rninutes, then boil it down to 300 to 400ml of decoction and remove the dregs. It is to be taken in two separate doses each day. It is applicable to patients suffering from obvious edema accompanied with hypertension; it is used to treat acute nephritis of the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material, or chronic nephritis marked by the type of hyperactivity of the liver-yang due to deficiency of both the liver-yin and the kidney-yin.
3) Black plum (Fruetus Mume) Make charcoal out of it, which is to be taken twice a day, 1.5g each time, until the end of seven or eight weeks. Its curative effect is all right for removing albumnuria. It can be used to treat chronic nephritis marked by the type of insufficiency of both the spleen and the kidney with deficiency of essence and blood.
4) Cogongrass rhizome (Rhizoma Imperatae) This is the best diuretic drug. Decoct in water 60g of fresh cogongrass rhizome (30g if the dried is used) for frequent drinking. It is applicable to patients troubled with edema and hematuria, and used to treat acute nephritis manifested as the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of damp-ness and toxic material, and the type of toxic heat attacking the interior causing damage to yin-blood, or chronic nephritis of the type of overflow of water within the body due to insuf-ficiency of the spleen-yang and kidney-yang.
5) Sesame seed(Semen Sesami Nigrum) Grind it into powder after it is parched. It is to be taken following its infusion in boiling water after sugar has been added to it, and used to treat chronic nephritis manifested as cold of insufficiency type of the lower-jiao due to protracted illness.
6) Waxgourd (Fructus Benincasae) Make three big bowls of soup with 500g of waxgourd and take the soup in three separate doses. It is applicable to acute nephritis of the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material and the type of toxic heat attacking the interior causing damage to the yin-blood.
7) Those who indicate the symptoms of obvious general edema and gradual reduction of the amount of urine should eat things good at inducing diuresis, such as radish (Napus) waxgourd (Fructus Benincasae), towel gourd (Fructus Luffae), red phaseolus bean (Semen Phaseoli), black soybean (Semen Sojae Nigrum), crucian carp (Carassius Auratus), bamboo shoots (Germen Phyllostachydis), water melon (Fructus CitruUi) and so on. Those in whose urine there are red blood cells proved by uroscopy should eat things that can arrest bleeding, such as shepherd's purse (Herba Capsellae), eggplant (Fructus Solani), shelled peanut (Semen Arachidis), cogongrass rhizome (Rhizoma Imperatae), lotus root with knots (Rhizoma Nelumbinis cum Nodo) and so on. Those who suffer from nephritis accompanied with hypertension should often eat food that can bring down blood pressure, such as jellyfish (Rhopilema), celery (Apium), spinach (Spinacia), tomato (Fructus Lycoper. isicii), Jew's-ear (Auricularia), fresh corn (Semeo Maydis Recens), water chestnut (Bulbus Heleocharis Tuberosae) and the like.
3. Composite Medicated Diet
l) Drink of Carp and Red Phaseolus Bean (Liyu Chidou Yin)
INGREDIENTS
big carp, Cyprinus Carpio. 1
red phaseolus bean, Semen Phaseoli 60g
PROCESS Stew the two ingredients together.
DIRECTIONS The fish and the beans are to be eaten and the soup to be drunk. Table salt should be avoided. It is to be taken in one meal. It is applicable to patients suffering from acute or chronic nephritis with symp-toms of distinct dropsy, dark urine and difficult urina-tion.
2) Egg Steamed with Pepper (Hujiao Jidan)
INGREDIENTS
white pepper, Fructus Piperis Albi 7 graiva

PROCESS Make a smallhole in the egg, put the seven grains of white pepper into it, seal the hole with flour and wrap the egg with wet paper. Then steam it in a food steamer until it is done.
DIRECTIONS The egg and the pepper are to be taken together after the egg is shelled, two eggs per day for adults, one for children, ten days making up one course of treatment. The second course of treatment is to begin following a suspen-sion of three days.
It is used to treat chronic nephritis manifested as the type of insufficiency of both the spleen and the kidney with deficiency of essence and blood.
3) Two-Dragon Soup (Er oTiao Tang)
INGREDIENTS
red phaseolus bean, Semen Phaseoli 120g
pokeberry root, Radix Phytolaccae 9g
PROCESS Decoct them in water.
DIRECTIONS To be drunk in one day. It is to be taken for 3 to 5 days on end. It is used to treat acute nephritis marked by the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material.
4) Decoction of Houttuynia and Plantain Herb (oTicai Che-qiancao Tang)
INGREDIENTS
houttuynia, Herba Houttuyniae 60g
plantain herb, Herba Plantaginis 60g
ROCESS Decoct them in water.
DIRECTIONS For oral administration. Applicable to nephritis patients with symptoms of distinct edema accom-panied with yellow and greasy fur.
5) Decoction of Red Phaseolus Bean and Mulberry Bark (Chidou Sangbaipi Tang)
INGREDIENTS
red phaseolus bean, Semen Phaseoli 60g
mulberry bark, Cortex Mori Radicis 15g
PROCESS Cook them together in water and when it is done, discard the mulberry bark.
DIRECTIONS The decoction is to be drunk and the red phaseolus bean to be eaten. It is quite good, when used as an auxiliary treatment, for chronic nephritis patients with symptoms of mild edema, a few pus cells in urine proved by uroscopy.
6) Red Phaseolus Bean Cooked with Cogongrass Rhizome (Maogen Zhu Chidou)
INGREDIENTS
cogongrass rhizome, Rhizoma Imperatae 250g
red phaseolus bean, Semen Phaseoli 120g
PROCESS Cook them together in water, when the water
is biled dry, get rid of the cogongrass rhizome.
DIRECTIONS The red phaseolus bean is to be eaten several times, chewed carefully before swallowed. Patients suffering from either acute or chronic nephritis of any type of syndromes can take it.
7) Powder of Frog, Mole Cricket and Bottle Gourd (Wa lou Hulu San)
INGREDIENTS
dried frog, Rama Nigromaculata seu Plancyi 2
mole crickets, Gyllotalpa Africana 7
old bottle gourd peel, Pericarpium Lagenariae 15g
PROCESS First parch them slightly; then grind them into powder or make pills with the powder.
DIRECTIONS To be taken with warm alcoholic drinks, 3 times a day, 6g each time. It is applicable to acute nephritis.
8) Thick Crucian Carp Soup (fiyu Geng)
INGRDIENTS
big crucian carp, Carassius Auratus 500g
garlic, Bulbus Allii 1
black pepper, Fructus Piperis Nigri 3g
pricklyash peel, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli 3g
tangerine peel, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 3g
amomum fruit, Fructus Amomi 3g
long pepper, Fructus Piperis Longi 3g
green Chinese onion, Bulbus Allii Fistulosi
thick sauce made from soybean
table salt
PROCESS Put all the other ingredients into the belly of the fish, and cook it; then make thick soup with it.
DIRECTIONS To be taken after seasoned. Applicable to chronic nephritis of all types.
9) Decoction of Princesplune Ladysthumb Fruit and Pork (Shuihongzi Zhurou Tang)
INGREDIENTS
princesplume ladysthumb fruit, Fructus Polygoni
Orientalis 30g
lean pork 120g
PROCESS Decoct them in water.
DIRECTIONS The pork is for eating and the decoction for drinking. To be taken in two separate doses on the same day. It is used to treat chronic nephritis manifested as hydrops or more proteinuria. Patients suffering from nephritis of overflow of water within the body due to deficiency of both the spleen-yang and the lddney-yang as well as the type of insufficiency of both the spleen and the kidney with deficiency of essence and blcod can take it.
10) Thick Soup of Waxgourd and Carp (Donggua Liyu Tang)
INGREDIENTS
carp, Cyprinus Carpio 500g
waxgourd, Fructus Benincasae (cubed) 200g
Chinese green onion, Bulbus Allii Fistulosi (cut into
sections) 10g
table salt a little
PROCESS Stew the carp together with waxgourd.
DIRECTIONS Put Chinese green onion sections and table salt into the stewed carp before it is taken. It is applica-ble to patients suffering from chronic nephritis.
11) Honeyed Prepared Rhizome of Rehmannia and Chinese Yam (Shudi Shanyao Mi)

Chinese yam, Rhizoma Dioscoreae 60g
honey, Mel 500g
PROCESS Wash the first two ingredients clean quickly, place them in an earthenware pot, pour in three big bowls of water, decoct them over slow fire for forty minutes and get a half bowl of the decoction; then add another bowl of cold water to the remaining drug, decoct them for thirty minutes until half bowl of the decoction is left and sift it out, mix the two-half bowls of decoction with the 500g of honey, pour the mix-ture into a ceramic basin, cover it so as not to let any steam get into the basin. Finally steam it with strong fire for two hours, and when it becomes cool, put it into a bottle and cover it tightly.
DIRECTIONS To be taken after meals with warm boiled water, twice a day, one spoonful each time. Those who are debilitated due to chronic nephritis can take it as nourishment.

DIRECTIONS Put Chinese green onion sections and table salt into the stewed carp before it is taken. It is applica-ble to patients suffering from chronic nephritis.
11) Honeyed Prepared Rhizome of Rehmannia and Chinese Yam (Shudi Shanyao Mi)
INGREDIENTS
prepared rhizome of rehmannia, Radix Rehmanniae Prae-
parata 60g
Chinese yam, Rhizoma Dioscoreae 60g
honey, Mel 500g
PROCESS Wash the first two ingredients clean quickly, place them in an earthenware pot, pour in three big bowls of water, decoct them over slow fire for forty minutes and get a half bowl of the decoction; then add another bowl of cold water to the remaining drug, decoct them for thirty minutes until half bowl of the decoction is left and sift it out, mix the two-half bowls of decoction with the 500g of honey, pour the mix-ture into a ceramic basin, cover it so as not to let any steam get into the basin. Finally steam it with strong fire for two hours, and when it becomes cool, put it into a bottle and cover it tightly.
DIRECTIONS To be taken after meals with warm boiled water, twice a day, one spoonful each time. Those who are debilitated due to chronic nephritis can take it as nourishment.
