A landmark report has confirmed that links between body fat and cancer are closer than ever before.
The report was carried out by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). It is said to be the most comprehensive ever published on the link between cancer and diet, physical activity and weight.
Its key finding is that maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do to prevent cancer.
Other findings in the report include:
1.There is "convincing" evidence that processed meats, including ham and bacon, increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
2.The evidence that red meat is a cause of colorectal cancer is stronger than ever. As a result it is advised that people should not eat any more than 500g of cooked red meat a week.
3.There is "convincing" evidence that breastfeeding protects the mother against breast cancer and "probable" evidence that it protects the child against obesity later in life. Breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months and continuing with complementary feeds after this is recommended for optimum protection.
4.The evidence that alcohol is a cause of cancer is stronger now than ever before.
Professor Martin Wiseman, Project Director of the Report, said: "This report is a real milestone in the fight against cancer, because its recommendations represent the most definitive advice on preventing cancer".
