Sciatica Alternative Remedies

Many of the sciatica alternative remedies can be just as effective as conventional ones. In many cases, sciatica alternative remedies have less side effects and less toxicity to the body as well be much less invasive. Some of these treatments date back hundreds of years while others have been developed with modern technology and knowledge. Using alternative methods to treat sciatica can bring about relief from pain, lessen the stress associated with the condition, and in some cases speed the healing process.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture, the art of using thin needles at specific points for healing, has long been used for various maladies. A practitioner will insert fine needles along the points of meridians, paths which allow the flow of energy, to disperse any blockages. To treat sciatica, the use of heat and herbs may be used along with the acupuncture needles. Acupressure, another Chinese method used to treat sciatica, uses the same meridians or acupoints as acupuncture. Instead of using needles, pressure from the fingers and elbows is applied to bring the energy back into balance. Tai chi, actually a form of martial arts, incorporates gentle flowing movements to bring the qi or energy back into balance while increasing flexibility and strength.

Using Food to treat Sciatica

Several well known health and nutrition experts have stated that certain foods can affect inflammation within a person¡¯s body. Highly processed foods are believed to contribute to inflammation related diseases while fish oils have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. Experts seem to agree that eating a large quantity of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables and moderate amounts of whole grains are beneficial in reducing inflammation, but seem to vary on how much and what sources of protein are ideal. Some believe that only fish and vegetable proteins should be ingested while others include all sources including dairy. Individuals will need to monitor how their bodies respond to certain foods in order to determine the best diet for themselves.

Herbal Sciatica Alternative Remedies

Herbs have been used for centuries to treat sciatica as well as all sorts of ailments. Many of them have scientific evidence to back them up. Willow bark, for example, contains salicylic acid and was widely used for pain relief. Aspirin, a modern medication, was originally synthesized from willow bark. Ginger and turmeric are two spices that have anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger has long been studied and has found to be effective for long term use. Today, there are many brands of herbs and herbal mixes that claim to reduce pain and aid healing. While many of them are effective, it is a good idea to keep in mind that some of these sciatica alternative remedies can be just as potent as modern medications and should be used with caution.
