Massage Good for Osteoarthritis

acupuncture for osteoarthritis

People suffering from arthritis of the knee joint may find significant pain relief from receiving a massage, according to a report published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

This approach may offer an alternative to conventional treatments for treating osteoarthritis of the knee, which include pain medication, injections, and even surgery. Osteoarthritis of the knee is among the leading causes of disability among elderly men and women. It is a degenerative disease that causes the knee cartilage to wear down. It may be caused by excess stress on the joint and causes pain, swelling, and a decrease in knee motion. A common symptom is morning stiffness that decreases with use, and over time, normal activity becomes painful and difficult.

Researchers assigned 68 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee to either an 8 week course of sessions of massage therapy or conventional treatment. One hour messages were given twice per week for the first 5 weeks, and then once per week in the last 3 weeks. Based on standard pain assessment methods, the group receiving massage therapy showed significantly reduced pain, stiffness, and improved range of motion. In addition, those who received massage therapy were able to walk much faster after 8 weeks.

It is believed that massage improves the effects of osteoarthritis by increasing circulation to the knee, contributing to improvements in muscle tone and joint flexibility. These research findings will be welcome news for the millions of people who are disabled due to knee osteoarthritis. Based on the evidence, massage will likely be used more often as a safe, cost-effective alternative to standard treatments.
