Differentiation and Treatment of Common Syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine

1. Interior Retension of Phlegm with Exopathic Cold:

Clinical manifestations: Cough with whitish thin sputum, dyspnea, or accompanied with chills and headache, whitish and moist fur of the tongue, string-like and tight or floating and tight pulse.

Therapeutic method: Relieving exterior syndrom and warming the interior organs, ventilating the lung to resolve phlegm retention.

Recipe: Xiao Qing Long Tang, modified

Ingredients:

Herba Ephedrae
Ramulus Cinnamomi
Fructus Schisandrae
Radix Paeoniae Alba
Herba Asari
Rhizoma Pinelliae
Rhizoma Zingiberis
Flos Farfarae
Radix Glycyrrhizae

Administration: All the above drugs are to be decocted in water for oral administration.

Modification: In case of cough with profuse sputum which is whitish and mucous, feeling of fullness and distress in the chest, anorexia, abdominal distension, all these suggest that the accumula-tion of phlegm-dampness is in the lung, add

2. Stagnation of Phlegm-heat:

Clinical manifestations: Bad cough with thick yellowish spu-tum, thirst, dry throat, yellow-coloured urine, constipation, red-dened tongue with yellow fur, slippery and rapid or taut and rapid pulse.

Therapeutic method: Removing pathogenic heat and resolving phlegm.

Recipe:Modified prescriptions of Lung-heat Expelling Powder combined with Decoction for Clearing Away Lung-heat and Disolv-ing Phlegm.

Ingredients:

Cortex Mori Radicis
Cortex Lucii Radicis
Radix Seutellariae
Rhizoma Anemarrhenae
Bulbus Fritilariae Cirrhosae
Semen Armeniacae Amarum
Radix Stemonae
Semen Trichcxsanthis
Folium Eriobotryae Praeparata

Administration: All the above drugs are be decocted in water for oral administration.

Modification: In case of high fever, add Gysum Fibrosum 20g; profuse sputum which is difficult to cough out; add Concha Meretricis seu Cyclinae 15g; in case of yin deficiency of both the lung and kidney marked by nonproductive cough or little sputum, hot sensation in the palms and soles, night sweat, reddened tongue with little fur, fine and rapid pulse, add

3. Deficiency of Both the Lung and Spleen:

Clinical manifestations: Weak cough, spontaneous perspira-tion, shortness of breath, tendency to catch cold, exacerbation of cough in contact with wind-cold, or anorexia and loose stools, thin whitish fur of tongue, and deep fine pulse.

Therapeutic method: Nourishing the lung by reinforcing the function of the spleen.

Recipe: Bu Fei Tang, modified

Ingredients:

Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae
Radix Astragali seu Hedysari
Fructus Schisandrae
Radix Asteris
Flos Farfarae
Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae
Poria
Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata

Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water to get 200-300ml of decoction. Take one half of it in the rooming and the oth-er half in the evening.
