1. Asthma of cold Type:

Clinical manifestations: A feeling of fullness and distress in the chest, dyspnea with wheezing sound in the throat, cough with thin sputum, frequent attacks in cold seasons or caused by cold, whitish, moist and glossy fur of the tongue, taut and tight pulse.

Therapeutic method: Ventilating the lung and expelling pathogenic cold, eliminating phlegm to relieve asthma.

Recipe: Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction with addi-tional ingredients:

Ingredients:

Administration: The decoction of a dose is 200ml. Take equal shares in the morning and evening.

Modification: In case of chill, add Ramulus Cinnamomi 10g;In case of severe asthma, add Semen Lepidii seu Descu-rainiae 10g and Lumbricus 10g.

2. Asthma of Heat Type:

Clinical manifestations: Dyspnea with wheezing, irritable oppressed sensation in the chest even gasping for breath, yel-lowish mueoid sputum, thirst, frequent occurrence in hot sea-sons or onset closely associated with heat, reddened tongue with yellow greasy fur, slippery and rapid pulse.

Therapeutic method: Removing heat-phlegm and facili-tating the flow of the lung-qi to relieve asthma.

Recipe: Decoction of Ephedra, modified Apricot Kernel, Gypsum and Licorice combined with Decoction of Three Kinds of Seed for the Aged.

Ingredients:

Administration:The decoction of a dose is 200--300ml. Take equal parts in the morning and evening.

Modification: In case of profuse perspiration, Herba Ephedrae is removed from the above recipe, on the other hand, Flos Lonicerae 30g is added if fever is present; Concha Meratricis seu Cyclinae 18g, Radix Glehniae 15g are employed for patients who cough with thick yellowish sputum; Lignum Aquilari-ae Resinatum 6g and Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis 10g for patients with dyspnea and adverse flow of qi.

3. Asthma of Deficiency Type:

Clinical manifestations: Chronic and recurrent attacks for a long time, constant minor and persistent asthma at ordinary times. The sound of cough being low and weak, palpitation and shortness of breath, spontaneous perspiration and aversion to wind, general debility, pale tongue with little fur, deep thready and weak pulse.

Therapeutic method: Tonifying the lung and spleen, im-proving inspiration to relieve asthma.

Recipe: Powder of Ginseng and Gecko

Ingredients:

Administration: All the above drugs except Gecko are to be decocted in water for oral administration.
